Which Devices For GPS Do You Need?
The purpose of this article is to give you information about a few devices for GPS that you will need to take the full advantage of this fantastic invention. The devices you need will depend on what you are going to use your GPS for.
In case you didn’t know, GPS is an abbreviation for Global Positioning System and is a global navigation satellite system originally created and developed by the United States Department of Defense. It is only functional global navigation satellite system in the world and it can be used freely by companies and private persons worldwide. The use of GPS has increased the recent years, mainly for navigation and tracking purposes.
A few GPS devices are described below.
Receivers
The basis of the GPS system is 24 GPS satellites in six orbits around the earth. GPS receivers are tracking information from these satellites and compute this information. The output of this computing is your location as well as the bearing, distance and time left to reach a certain destination plus a few other route options. Satellites are tracked continuously so the information they generate are always in real time. The more satellites receiver devices for GPS can track, the more advantages, such as
- Better quality reception
- Quicker cold start
- Regular initialization
- You don’t have to add an external antenna if you use it in an open vehicle
Resolution
The higher screen resolution your GPS has, the more clearly you can see and there is no doubt that this is a great advantage in bright daylight. High definition models have color screens and will also provide information about weather and the actual terrain.
Maps
Map devices for GPS are integrated in the hard drive in most models. You can have maps that show details up to street level. The map software includes a menu option where you can access the data you need. You can, for example
- input a name and the gps tracking device will give you the coordinates of the destination on the map or
- input the coordinates and the system will give you the destination.
There are models providing very detailed map information on a specific location but these can be expensive. Other models let you download the latest maps either directly for the internet or via CD-ROM or DVD-ROM discs. You can get models where you have to subscribe to a plan for updating the maps while this is included on other models.
The devices for GPS described above are only a few of many devices you can use together with GPS. As mentioned in the beginning, the devices you will need to work with your GPS will depend on what you are going to use it for.
